Lord Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of India.
The office of the viceroy was established by the Government of India Act of 1858. Viceroy was the head of British India. The last viceroy of British India was Lord Mountbatten. He was appointed as a viceroy in the year 1947. Lord Mountbatten presented the provisions for an independent India. For this purpose, he gave the partition plan in June 1947. According to it, British India was divided into two nations- India and Pakistan. He presided over the Partition Committee. Thus, the partition plan became the basis of the Independence of India Act of 1947, according to which India and  Pakistan gained independence.
