Detailed Solution

Louis XVI was sentenced to death by a court on the charge of treason.
The French monarch Louis XVI's decision to impose further taxes on the Third Estate by convoking the Estates General was the trigger point for the revolution in 1789. His powers were drastically reduced by the Constitution of 1791, which gave away his legislative and judicial powers to the National Assembly and the judiciary, respectively; thus, it ushered in a period of constitutional monarchy. However, in 1792 constitutional monarchy ceased to exist; France was made a republic. The monarch and his family were imprisoned in September 1792 and, after being tried in a court on the charge of treason, were sentenced to death and executed in January 1793.
