Detailed Solution

The town of Machilipatnam or Masulipatnam lies on the delta of the Krishna river. It was a hub of intense trading activity in the seventeenth century. The English and the Dutch East India Company tried to assert their dominance over Masulipatnam as it gradually became an important port on the coast of Andhra. As a result, there was fierce competition among diverse trading groups, such as the Persian merchants, Golconda nobles, European traders, and Telugu Komati Chettis, making Masulipatnam populous and prosperous. However, Masulipatnam lost its prosperity when the European company traders moved to Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras. Thus, it declined over the eighteenth century and is a little town now.
Hence the statement is true.
