Detailed Solution

Mahadji Sindhia and Nana Phadnis were two notable Maratha soldiers and statesmen of the late eighteenth century. The East India Company started attempting to limit and finally eradicate Maratha's dominance in the late eighteenth century. The Marathas' aspiration to rule Delhi was crushed by their defeat in the Third Battle of Panipat in 1761. They were broken up into numerous states, ruled by various sardars (chiefs) from dynasties, including the Sindhia, Holkar, Gaikwad, and Bhonsle. These chiefs formed a confederacy under the leadership of a Peshwa (Principal Minister), who served as the organisation's de facto military and executive leader and was based in Pune.
