Mahajanapada consisted of 16 kingdoms in India. In ancient times, it was made by gaining a large area and became janapadas. It was the later Vedic period which existed about 2500 years ago. Mahajanapada was set up when people (tribes) of this period decided to form their territorial communities, which led to the rise of new and permanent areas of settlements called states or janapadas. In mahajanapadas period, ganas and sanghas existed. Mahajanpads was fortified and had its capital. Some of the names of mahajanapadas were Magadha, Kashi, Anga, Kosala, Panchala, Avanti and kuru.
