Maharaja Ranjit Singh established his kingdom in Lahore in 1799.
Twelve Sikh misls merged to create a single Sikh state governed by Maharaja Ranjit Singh, creating a new empire. On April 12th, 1801, Ranjit Singh was crowned in Lahore. All Sikh Misls (warring bands) united to form one state in 1799, and Maharaja Ranjit Singh governed from Lahore, the capital. Between 1745 and 1756, the city had nine different governors, making the 1740s turbulent years. Bands of armed Sikhs were able to seize various places due to invasions and the state of the local authority. In addition, the recurrent Afghan attacks of the 1740s, commanded by Ahmad Shah Abdali, wrecked local authority and made life very difficult for the people of Lahore.
