Throughout his time in South Africa, he endured humiliation as a result of racism that was frequently directed against Indians and Black people. He was already a renowned and respected leader, having led Indians in that nation in peaceful protests against racist laws. He had interacted with various Indians during his South African campaigns, including upper-class businessmen, attorneys, and labourers, Hindus, Muslims, Parsis, Christians, Gujaratis, Tamils, and north Indians. Gandhi returned to India in 1915 at Gopal Krishna Gokhale's urging.
