Mahatma Gandhi called off the Non-Cooperation Movement due to the incident which occurred in Charui Chaura.
The Chauri Chaura incident transpired on February 5, 1922, in the Gorakhpur district. During the Non-Cooperation Movement, a group of protestors clashed with the police. The policemen opened fire on the protestors. Aggravated by this shooting incident, the demonstrators burnt a police station, killing several policemen and civilians. Since it turned violent, Gandhi called off the movement.
