This statement is explained as follows:
1)      On January 31, 1930, nationalist leaders sent a letter to Viceroy Irwin starting eleven demands.
2)      A number of these were of general interest and were specific demands of various categories starting from industrialists to peasants.
3)      The concept was to create a wide-ranging strain so that all categories of the Indian society may unite together under a unified campaign.
4)      The foremost steering demand was to get rid of the salt tax.
5)      Salt was an essential food item consumed by both the rich and the poor.
6)      The government had a monopoly over its production and levied a tax on it.
7)      Gandhi’s letter was an ultimatum that declared that if the demands were not fulfilled by 11 March, Congress would launch an entire direct action campaign.
8)      Since Irwin was not ready to negotiate, the nationalist leader started his famous Salt March with seventy-eight volunteers.
9)      The march was over 240 miles from Gandhi's ashram in Sabarmati to the Gujarati coastal city of Dandi.
10) On April 6th, Gandhi reached Dandi and desecrated the law by producing salt from boiling seawater.
