Mahatma Gandhi decided to call off the Civil disobedience movement and entered into a pact with Irwin on 5 March 1931.
Various sections of the nation broke the salt law, boycotted imported cloth and picketed liquor stores. The colonial authorities became alarmed by the developments and started detaining the Congress leaders one by one. In many palaces, this resulted in violent fights. As a result of this growing violence and unrest in the country, Gandhi decided to call off the movement.
