The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) is Indian legislation enacted in 2005. It provides a legal guarantee of 100 days of wage employment every financial year to an adult member of a rural household, provided that he is willing to engage in unskilled manual labour. If it fails to employ within 15 days of applying, the applicant is eligible to receive an unemployment allowance. Thus, this scheme has been trying to reduce employment in rural India by providing employment opportunities to the uneducated.
