Mahatma Gandhi organised a satyagraha in the Kheda district of Gujarat to support the peasants. When Gandhiji came to know about the distress of peasants because of the failure of crops, he advised them to withhold payments of taxes till their demand of remission was met. He and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel organised a struggle against the British government in Kheda in 1917. Crops in Kheda failed because of the droughts, but the government was not in the mood to exempt the peasants from paying revenue. People from all castes and backgrounds supported the movement. Through this movement, the British administration gave concessions to the peasants later on.
