Detailed Solution

Mahatma Gandhi organised a satyagraha to support the peasants in the Kheda district of Gujarat in 1918. Gandhi is credited with starting the first non-cooperation movement with the Kheda satyagraha in 1918. Due to crop failure and famine, farmers in the Kheda district were in hardship. The British administration insisted on collecting all land revenue and refused to remit any of it. As part of the experiment, Mahatma Gandhi advised the peasants to delay paying revenue until their petition for its remission was granted. Gandhi directed Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel to lead the farmers in a demonstration against tax collecting after the famine. The government finally gave up and made a few concessions to the farmers.
