Mahatma Gandhi returned to his homeland, India, in the year 1915. After returning, he organised his first satyagraha in India at Champaran. Champaran is a small district in Bihar. The peasants in the district were in severe need of help. The peasants of Champaran struggled against the oppressive plantation system prevalent in the district. Mahatma Gandhi travelled to Champaran in 1917 and inspired the peasants to stand up against the oppression and raise their voices with the help of the idea of satyagraha.
