In January 1915, Mahatma Gandhi returned to India. He had arrived from South Africa, where he had used an innovative strategy of mass agitation that he called satyagraha to defeat the racist government. The concept of satyagraha emphasised the importance of seeking out the truth and the strength of the truth. Mahatma Gandhi led the workers from Newcastle to Transvaal in a Satyagraha March. Thousands more workers joined the satyagraha against discriminatory laws that denied rights to non-whites after the marchers were stopped and Gandhiji was taken into custody.
