Mahatma Gandhi returned to British India in 1915 from South Africa. He had successfully battled against the racial system there with a new method of mass agitation. This movement came to be known as satyagraha. Satyagraha was based on the idea of fighting against injustice in a non-violent manner and appealing to the conscience of the oppressors. Gandhi believed that the dharma of non-violence would bring Indians together to defeat the British.
