Mahatma Gandhi started his famous Salt march on 12 March 1930.
Gandhiji began his Salt March, also known as Dandi March, on 12 March 1930 from his ashram in Sabarmati to Dandi, a coastal town in Gujarat. The Salt Satyagraha was organized in response to Viceroy Lord Irwin's refusal to negotiate the 11 demands put forward by Gandhiji in his letter. One of them was the abolition of the tax on salt. Thus on 6 April, he reached Dandi with 78 trusted followers and defied the government by manufacturing salt, a British monopoly.
