Mahatma Gandhi started his famous Salt March accompanied by 78 of his trusted volunteers. Gandhi wanted the tax on salt to be removed. Salt was an essential commodity which was consumed by the poor and rich alike. However, the price of salt had increased due to the imposition of taxes on it, which was considered unjust by Gandhi. He wrote about the problem in his "11 demands", which the Viceroy Lord Irwin did not acknowledge. As a result, Gandhiji initiated the Civil Disobedience Movement and started the famous Dandi March in March 1930. By producing salt on the beaches of Dandi, he violated the salt law.
