Detailed Solution

Mahatma Gandhi visited Champaran to support the indigo planters. Gandhi was asked in 1917 to investigate the issues facing farmers in relation to the Champaran indigo planters in Bihar. European colonists had coerced the villagers to cultivate indigo on 3/20 of the total amount of land (called tinkathia system). Gandhi visited various villages in the district, talking to the local farmers and noting their plight and grievances regarding the forced indigo cultivation. He was told by the authorities to leave right away. Gandhi disobeyed the directive and decided to take punishment. He used civil disobedience or passive resistance to defy an unfair order.
