Detailed Solution

Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse. He was called the "father of the nation." Less than six months after obtaining independence, the country was in mourning. On January 30, 1948, a zealot named Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi because he disagreed with Gandhiji's idea that Hindus and Muslims should coexist. The country was in shock and despair. On All India Radio that evening, a stunned nation heard Jawaharlal Nehru's emotional statement: "Friends and comrades, the light has gone out of our existence, and there is darkness everywhere."
