Mahatma Gandhi’s Salt March marked the beginning of the Civil Disobedience Movement. Mahatma Gandhi identified salt as a powerful symbol capable of unifying the masses. He sent Viceroy Irwin a letter with eleven demands on January 31, 1930. Some were of general interest, while others were geared to the unique needs of different social classes, ranging from industrialists to peasants. The goal was to widen the demands so that all types of Indian society could identify with them and unite in a single campaign.
