Detailed Solution

India is one of the largest producers and exporters of tea in the world. After a period of fluctuating volumes, exports have shown significant growth.

Export Volumes and Value

  • Recent Growth: India's tea exports saw a significant jump in 2024, making it the second-largest tea exporter in the world.
  • Volume: Total tea exports in the calendar year 2024 reached approximately 254-255 million kilograms. This was a notable increase from the 231.69 million kilograms exported in 2023.
  • Value: The export revenue from tea in 2024 was valued at approximately ₹7,112 crore. For the fiscal period of April-December 2024, exports were valued at US$627.36 million.
  • Tea Types: The vast majority of Indian tea exports are black tea (both CTC and orthodox). There is also a growing, though smaller, market for green tea and specialty teas.

Major Export Destinations

India exports tea to over 25 countries. The primary markets for Indian tea are a mix of traditional partners and high-growth regions.

Based on recent trade data, the top 5 destination countries are:

  1. United Arab Emirates (UAE): The UAE has become the top importer of Indian tea by value, serving as both a major consumption market and a critical re-export hub for the Middle East and North Africa.
  2. United States (USA): A strong and growing market, particularly for higher-value orthodox teas, green teas, and specialty/wellness blends.
  3. Iraq: A major volume-driven market for Indian CTC black tea.
  4. United Kingdom (UK): A traditional, large-volume market for Indian tea, especially Assam CTC blends.
  5. Russia: A long-standing major partner, primarily importing black tea.

Other significant importers include Iran, Germany, and China.
