Detailed Solution

The Indus River is fed by numerous tributaries, with the most significant being the "Panjnad" (Five Rivers) group in the Punjab region. These are the main eastern tributaries:

  • Jhelum: Flows from the Indian-administered Kashmir, joins the Chenab River at Trimmu in Pakistan.
  • Chenab: The largest of the Panjnad rivers, it is joined by the Jhelum (at Trimmu) and the Ravi (near Ahmedpur Sial).
  • Ravi: Flows from Himachal Pradesh, India, and joins the Chenab River in Pakistan.
  • Beas: Flows from Himachal Pradesh, India, and joins the Sutlej River at Harike in Punjab, India.
  • Sutlej: Originating in Tibet, it enters India and is joined by the Beas. It later joins the Chenab River (which is by then carrying the waters of the Jhelum and Ravi) at Panjnad in Pakistan.

The combined waters of these five rivers, known as the Panjnad River, flow for a short distance before joining the Indus River at Mithankot in Pakistan.

The Indus also has major western and northern tributaries, including the ShyokZanskarGilgit, and Kabul rivers, which join it in its upper mountainous course.
