Detailed Solution

Majoritarian policies were initiated after Sri Lanka gained independence in 1948. Tamil speakers (18%) and Sinhala speakers (74%) make up the two largest social groups in Sri Lanka. Tamils are divided into two factions- native Sri Lankan Tamils and Indian Tamils. The majority Sinhala community thus gained control of the government after independence as they were in the majority. The government then initiated a series of policies that overlooked the interest of the Tamil community. For instance, it recognised Sinhalese as the official language of the country. This caused the Tamils to feel alienated and eventually led to a civil war.
