Mangal Pandey was a Hindu Brahmin sepoy who sparked the uprising in 1857.
The uprising started when sepoys refused to use brand-new rifle cartridges because they believed they were smeared with grease made of a combination of pigs' and cows' lard, making them unclean for Muslims and Hindus. The wife of a colonel in Mangal Pandey's regiment had Bibles printed in Indian languages and delivered to the sepoys. The sepoys' were worried that they were being converted to Christianity. It also contributed to the feeling of angst among the soldiers.
