Using brooms, tin plates, and baskets to remove human and animal waste/excreta from dry latrines and transporting it on one's head to disposal grounds some distance away is known as manual scavenging. One who does the task of moving this filth is known as a manual scavenger. Dalit women and young girls mainly do this job. They are frequently exposed to illnesses that affect their gastrointestinal, respiratory, ocular, and skin systems. They are paid relatively little for the labour they do.
