The manuscripts were expensive and fragile. Handwritten texts were difficult to read. It was written in many styles. Teachers used to dictate the written text according to their memory students noted them down. Students could only learn to write down the manuscript but not read them. In the pre-colonial period, even though there was a primary school in the village of Bengal, the manuscript was not used in everyday life. Students gained the knowledge but without reading the actual text.
