Detailed Solution

The Maratha empire established by Shivaji was located in the Southwestern part of India.
The Marathas tried to expand themselves to vast regions. But after their defeat in the third battle of Panipat, the empire was divided into smaller states. The states were ruled by sardars and known by different dynasties, such as Scindia, Holkar, Gaekwad, and Bhonsle. However, these states formed a  confederacy under a leader known as Peshwa, with an administrative centre in Pune. The Marathas posed a considerable threat to the Company in the southwest, which resulted in three  Anglo-Maratha wars in the 18th and 19th centuries. Finally, the British crushed the Maratha power in the third Anglo-Maratha war of 1817-19.
