Detailed Solution

Market streets were called Hatta.
The Indian subcontinent was populated by numerous small towns from the start of the eighth century. Historians point out that these could have evolved from large villages. These towns usually had a mandapika, which came to be known as mandi later, to which villagers living nearby brought their produce for selling. Market streets called hatta were lined with shops. There were also streets for various artisans, such as oil pressers, potters, toddy makers, sugar makers, stonemasons, and smiths. Few traders stayed in the town, whereas others traversed from town to town. Many came from distant places to purchase local articles and sell exotic products from faraway locations, such as camphor, spices, betel nut, saffron, salt, horses, and pepper.
