Detailed Solution

Martial Law in 1919 was imposed at Amritsar.
Numerous cities had protested against the Rowlatt Act, and shops closed in addition to workers striking in railroad shops. The British government stamped on nationalists in response to public uprising and concern that communication channels like the railways might be interrupted. Mahatma Gandhi was denied entry to Delhi while local leaders were picked up from Amritsar. On April 10, Amritsar police opened fire on a peaceful demonstration, setting off a wave of attacks on banks, post offices, and train stations. General Dyer assumed command when Martial Law was instated.
