Basavanna initiated the Veerashaiva movement in Karnataka with his companions Akkamahadevi and Allama Prabhu. They strongly opposed the Brahmanical ideas of caste and inequalities and treatment of women. In Veerashaiva vachanas, he points out that a rich person can give money to construct a temple of Shiva.
He then proceeds by saying that as a poor man, he can only offer his body to be the temple of Shiva.
He offers his legs to be the pillars, his body to be the shrine, and his head to be the cupola.
In the end, he mentions that his body as a temple is better because things that keep moving last longer.
