Q.

Match the column I and II in the basis of  Metal and Non-metal under the following heads.

Column I

Column II(metal,non metal)

1. Nature

P.Metals form basic oxides some of which form alkalis, Non-metals form acidic or neutral oxides.

2. State

Q.Metals replace hydrogen from acids and from salts, Non-metals do not replace hydrogen from acids.

3. Metallic

R.Ductile,Non-ductile

4. Ductility

S.Metals are lustrous,Non-metals are non-lustrous. They cannot be polished.

5. Reaction with acids

T.Metals are solid (except mercury),Non-metals exist in all the three states, i.e., solid, liquid and gas.

6. Reaction with oxygen in air

U.Metals are electropositive in nature,Non-metals are electronegative in nature

Detailed Solution

Concept- On the basis of the mentioned criteria, we must distinguish between metals and nonmetals in this subject. Examples of non-metals include silicon, carbon, phosphorus, and many others. Examples of metals include aluminium, sodium, mercury, and many more. We can tell metals from nonmetals by examining the characteristics of instances.Let's now examine each of the differences between metals and nonmetals while taking the provided instances into consideration.
In nature, metals like sodium, mercury, and so on are electropositive, whereas non-metals like phosphorus, silicon, and so forth are electronegative.
The only metal that exists in a liquid state is mercury; all other metals exist exclusively in their solid forms. Non-metals represent all three states of matter, such as solid, liquid, and gas, if we are talking about their state.
The third characteristic is lustre; non-metals lack lustre and shine, whereas metals have. The fourth point is ductility; although non-metals are not ductile, metals are. Metals can be divided into thin sheets, as we can see. The fifth one is the reaction with the acids; metals may displace hydrogen in this reaction, which results in the creation of salts, but non-metals cannot.
Talking about the last one, which is the reaction with the oxygen in the air. Metals will create basic oxides in this circumstance, whereas nonmetals will generate acidic or neutral oxides.
Hence, the correct option is 2.
