Raja Rammohan Roy, a reformer of 19th-century Bengal, started publishing Sambad Kaumudi in 1821. Through the newspaper, he propagated the need for renouncing social evils like the practice of Sati.

E. V. Ramaswamy Naicker, popular as Periyar, was a social reformer in Madras. He led several agitations for the eradication of the caste system. His writings on the social evil of the caste system were explosive, criticizing the domination of the Brahmins.

In retaliation to Sambad Kaumudi, the Hindu orthodoxy started publishing Samachar Chandrika, which opposed Rammohan Roy's reformist opinions.

Jyotiba Phule was a social activist and anti-caste reformer of the 19th century in Maharashtra. His book Gulamgiri (1871)wrote about the injustices perpetrated on the lower castes because of the caste system.

In 1867, the Deoband Seminary was established by Islamic scholars. It published fatwas or legal pronouncements informing the Muslims on the right way to conduct themselves according to the Sharia law and also explained the meaning of Islamic doctrines.
