Shifting cultivation is known as lading in Southeast Asia, milpa in Central America, chitemene or tavy in Africa, chena in Sri Lanka, dhya, penda, bewar, nevada, jhum, podu and khandad in India. Shifting cultivation or swidden agriculture was highly affected by British colonialism. Nevertheless, swidden agriculture is a traditional practice in many parts of Asia, Africa and South America. In shifting cultivation, plots of forest land are cut and burnt in rotation. The ashes of the burnt trees and bushes get used as fertiliser, in which the cultivators sow the seeds after the first monsoon rains.
