The people across many states rose in rebellion against colonial rule during the Revolt of 1857. They declared war to remove the colonial empire.

In Delhi, Badshah Bahadur Shah Zafar was proclaimed the leader. He sent letters to rulers across India to join hands in revolt against the British.

In Jhansi, Rani Laxmibai led the revolt. She refused to surrender the city to the British and presented active resistance to the British.

Nana Saheb, son of Peshwa Baji Rao II, organised a rebellion in Kanpur. He accumulated military power and pushed the British out of Kanpur.

Lucknow was the capital of Awadh. Begum Hazrat Mahal organised people for the rebellion.

Rani Avantibai Lodhi of Mandla organised a rebellion in the Mandla region of Madhya Pradesh. She organised an army of four thousand.
