State highways are those that link a state capital with different district headquarters. These roads are constructed and maintained by the State PWD. Finally, rural roads link rural areas and villages with towns. Special impetus is received on these roads under the Pradhan Mantri Grameen Sadak Yojana. Special provisions are made so that every village is linked to one or many major towns in the country. The government of India's undertaking, The Border Roads Organisation, was established in 1960 to construct and maintain roads in the bordering areas of the country.
