Megaliths are large stone boulders (literally big stones). These are some of the earliest man-made structures, and they provide evidence for prehistoric cultures. People carefully arranged these and used them to mark burial sites. Megalithic construction began around 3000 years ago and was widespread throughout the Deccan, south India, the northeast, and Kashmir. While some megaliths are visible on the surface, many megalithic burials are underground. Archaeologists may come across a circle of stone boulders or a single large stone standing on the ground. These are the only indications that burials exist beneath. People did a variety of things to create megaliths.
