Print and popular religious literature influenced many different ways of understanding faith, even among the least educated working people.Menocchio, an Italian miller, began reading books in the sixteenth century. He reinterpreted the Bible's message and developed a view of God and Creation that infuriated the Roman Catholic Church. When the Roman Church launched its inquisition to suppress heretical ideas, Menocchio was hauled up twice and eventually executed. Concerned about how popular books would affect people and how they would feel about their faith, the Roman Church put strict rules on publishers and booksellers and started keeping an Index of Prohibited Books in 1558.
