The menstrual discharge from the uterus contains blood, tissue fl uid, mucus and epithelial cells that are shed from the endometrium. This is due to the decreased levels of progesterone and oestrogen, which stimulate the release of prostaglandins, causing the uterine spiral arterioles to constrict and causing the cells they supply
to become oxygen-deprived and eventually die. This leads to the sloughing off of the stratum functionalis of the endometrium. The menstrual fl ow then exits the body through the uterine cavity, cervix and vagina.

(1) Oxytocin has no role in menstruation. It plays a role in parturition and milk ejection.

(2) Vasopressin plays no role in menstruation. It helps to maintain flquid balance and blood pressure.

(4) FSH stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles.
