Merchants preferred to travel in caravans.
Since it saved them time, merchants liked to travel in caravans. The merchants travelling to the towns to market their wares found caravans to be a convenient mode of transportation. Only expensive items were worth transporting over long distances, so merchants had to pay tolls at strategic locations like bridges and mountain passes. They served as middlemen, purchasing the farmers' excess produce and providing credit so that the farmers could afford to buy supplies. Caravanserais or guest houses built to welcome travelling merchants as they made their way along these trade routes, were spread along the interior Silk Roads.
