Detailed Solution

For the formation of amalgam, first the metal ion reduces to metal atom and then undergoes solvolysis with mercury atom. This solvation process does not occur with iron because iron is very stable due to its electronic configuration. Therefore, it does not allow Hg to incorporate Hg into its lattice. As a result, solvolysis process does not occur and no amalgam formation takes place with iron.
