Nitric acid (dilute or conc.) renders aluminium and beryllium  passive.
Because when metal  comes into contact with nitric acid, an impervious layer of metal oxide is formed. This layer of metal oxide will prevent the nitric acid from coming into contact with the inner layer metal.
