MGNREGA, or the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, was enacted in 2005. It was started to provide 100 days of wage employment to at least one person from a rural family. It continues to be one of the anti-poverty measures taken by the government of India. Under this programme, one-third of the jobs are reserved for women. It has been successful in creating financial independence for women.
