Military expeditions into the south started during the reign of Alauddin Khalji. He was among the Sultanate of Delhi's most powerful sultans. The southernmost kingdoms of India were the destination of an army sent by Alauddin Khalji under Malik Kafur's leadership. By giving the southern states enormous treasures instead of adhering to the annexation program, he essentially pushed them to bow to Delhi's rule. The southern state kings had to submit to the sultan's authority and pay tribute to keep their positions of authority. He carried out raids in Devagiri, Madura, and Telangana. Before reaching Rameshwaram in the south, he had conquered the majority of the southern kingdoms.
