The milk of Rosie, the first transgenic cow, was nutritionally more balanced for human babies because it contained alpha-lactalbumin. Alpha-lactalbumin is a whey protein found in human breast milk.It is essential for infant nutrition, providing crucial amino acids and promoting healthy growth. In normal cow milk, the dominant whey protein is beta-lactalbumin. Through genetic modification, Cow Rosie produced milk with a higher proportion of human alpha-lactalbumin. This composition makes Cow Rosie’s milk a more biologically relevant option for human babies who may not have access to human breast milk.

(1) Alpha-1-antitrypsin is a protein produced by the liver and released into the bloodstream. It plays a critical role in protecting lung tissue from damage caused by enzymes released by immune cells. Individuals with alpha- 1-antitrypsin deficiency are more susceptible to emphysema.

(3) Insulin-like growth factor (IGF) is a hormone that plays a crucial role in growth and development, particularly during childhood and adolescence. It promotes cell growth, replication, and differentiation in various tissues.

(4) Adenosine deaminase (ADA) is an enzyme that plays a vital role in the conversion of adenosine and deoxyadenosine to less harmful substances. Deficiency of ADA leads to a severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) disorder, commonly known as ‘bubble boy disease,’ which compromises the immune system and makes affected individuals highly susceptible to infections.
