Detailed Solution

The mitral valve (bicuspid valve) is located between the left atrium and the left ventricle. The primary function of the mitral valve is to ensure one-way blood flow from the left atrium to the left ventricle while preventing the backflow of blood from the left ventricle to the left atrium. During atrial systole, the left atrium contracts to push oxygenated blood into the left ventricle. The mitral valve opens during this phase to allow blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle. During ventricular systole, when the left ventricle contracts, the mitral valve closes to prevent the backflow of blood from the left ventricle into the left atrium. Thus blood from the left ventricle is pumped into the aorta, which then distributes oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.
