Mohammad Ali and Shaukat Ali launched the khilafat movement in 1920 to restore the position of khalifa. Muslims considered the religious head the caliph (or khalifa) sultan of turkey. During the 2nd world war, the British threatened turkey by weakening the khalifa's position then Indian Muslims adopted an aggressive anti-British attitude. Gandhiji and INC supported this movement. It resulted in Hindu-Muslim unity along with the two movements Gandhiji along with the Ali brothers. INC started a non-cooperation movement (NCM) for swaraj as its ultimate aim in NCM Indians started a boycott of everything position, organisation, titles, offices etc.
