Most animals that live in deep oceanic waters are detritivores.  As no light is available at this zone, the energy source for deep benthic ecosystems is organic matter which drifts down to the depth. This dead and decaying matter sustains the benthic organisms. Therefore, most organisms in benthic zone are scavengers or detritivores.
