Most Indian indentured workers came from eastern Uttar Pradesh. An indentured worker is a bonded labourer who has promised to work for an employer for a fixed amount of time in exchange for the cost of his transportation to a new country or residence. During the nineteenth century, thousands of Indian and Chinese labourers were engaged in plantations, mines, and road and railway construction projects worldwide. These indentured labourers were hired in India under contracts that promised them a return journey to India after five years of service on the plantation. The majority of indentured slaves in India came from eastern Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, central India, and Tamil Nadu.
