Most of the migrants in Delhi are from Punjab. Since Punjab was closer to the capital, Hindus and Sikhs from Pakistan rushed toward Delhi in search of a new life and occupation. After the partition in 1947, when the country was divided into three parts - East Pakistan, West Pakistan, and India, the capital of India, Delhi, saw a huge increase in its population of 8 Lakhs. The new census now stood at 13 Lakhs with an addition of 5 lakhs refugees - mainly from West Pakistan or the region of Punjab. The city of Delhi also changed with this new social group and became even more diverse.
